This is how atrial fibrillation is treated (successfully), the most frequent arrhythmia in humans
The Arrhythmia Unit of the HLA Moncloa University Hospital, headed by Dr. Jesús Paylos, is a leader in Spain in the definitive treatment of atrial fibrillation

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in Spain. In fact, three of every ten fatalities are the result of heart disease. Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia affecting people over the age of 50 and the most frequent in specialist consultations. Four out of every ten visits with cardiologist are due to atrial fibrillation and these patients have five times higher risk than the general population, to suffer a stroke.
In this context, the Arrhythmia Unit at the HLA Moncloa University Hospital, headed by Dr. Jesus Paylos, is a leader in Spain and among the best in the world in the definitive treatment of Atrial Fibrillation. In 2008, it was the first to introduce cryoballoon ablation in our country, a technique that applies cold to achieve complete electrical disconnection of the pulmonary veins from the left atrium.
With an average of 98% of success rate, Dr. Paylos and his team have performed more than 3,220 ablations by radiofrequency and cold without major complications, and very low morbidity (0.8%). These results, together with Dr. Paylos’ world class expertise, result in the hospital being the only Spanish centre that participates in a global study on cryoballoon ablation, the 'Cryo AF Global Registry', whose objective is to evaluate the lack of recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation within 12 months after the ablation, and involves 35 participating countries from Europe, Asia and America.
The Cardiac Electrophysiology Unit of HLA Moncloa University Hospital is the first among the private institutions in Spain to own a 'Philips Azurion 7C20', an image guided terapy system that reduces direct radiation to the patient and diffuses it to the doctor by 40%, while enabling the resolution of the images to be eight times higher.
